About Cal Stars

The Cal Stars were founded in 2006 by Club Director Kelly Sopak and are one of thirty-two Nike Girls' Elite Youth Basketball Programs (GEY) in the nation. The Cal Stars' offices are located in beautiful downtown Orinda near Coach Sopak's home though the Cal Stars serve all of Northern California and Oregon.

The Cal Stars Nike travel teams play a national-caliber schedule and are always placed in the top brackets in these tournaments. The Cal Stars' flagship team, Cal Stars Nike Elite, competes in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL). The Cal Stars have a highly skilled staff of coaches and administrators that excel at basketball skill training and program development.

Mission Statement

The purpose and mission of the Cal Stars Basketball Club is to improve the game of basketball from the ground up. We continue to demonstrate our ability to train and develop young female athletes into great players. This has been our Cal Stars Mission since our inception. Our mission is also shared by Nike Girls Elite Youth Basketball (GEY). We are honored to share this mission with Nike. The Cal Stars is more than "on the court". We strive to make our players better citizens. We instill confidence, leadership and a strong work ethic into all of our players.

Nike Girls Elite Youth Basketball (GEY)

The Cal Stars Basketball Club is one of thirty two programs in the nation to be officially sponsored by Nike Girls Elite Youth Basketball. Being a part of the Nike family allows our program the ability to compete against the best team/players in the country at all of the best tournaments. Our entire program is Nike sponsored but we have THREE NIKE TRAVEL TEAMS and two anchor teams in the Cal Stars Nike Elite (Top program team) and Cal Stars Nike 15u (Frosh) team. These programs are eligible to compete for a spot to win Nike Nationals, the most prestigious college viewing tournament on the planet.

Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL)

As part of the Nike GEY (Girls Elite Youth) Basketball Program the Cal Stars flagship team, Cal Stars Nike Elite or as often referred Cal Stars EYBL IS A MEMBER of the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League, EYBL.

The EYBL is a unique national league wherein the thirty-two nationally sponsored Nike teams compete in a 32 team National League. The thirty-two teams are divided into four divisions and they compete at two major viewing events, Boo Williams (Hampton, VA) and either Nike Summer Showcase (Chicago, Ill) or Battle of the Boro (Nashville, TN). The top Twenty-Four teams then meet at Nike Nationals in North Augusta, SC, THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS AND BEST RUN TOURNAMENT ON THE PLANET!!!

The "League" has it is referred to is often imitated but never duplicated. The EYBL features live streaming, college officials, full statistical data on all games and players, frozen rosters and the full blitz of social media and national media publications at every game. Winning matters in the EYBL and it brings out the best in the top talent nationally!

Coaching/Director

The Cal Stars is under the direction of our founder Kelly Sopak.  Coach Sopak has over Fifteen years of experience operating an elite basketball club. The Cal Stars coaching staff has a tremendous amount of coaching experience in the area. Most of our sixteen club coaches have high school coaching experience. All of our coaches have a high standard of integrity, demeanor and a strong fundamental backing in the game of basketball. Each Cal Star coach has been certified, first aid/cpr trained and undergone extensive Cal Star coaching training.

Skill Development

The Cal Stars Basketball Club offers the highest level of skill development in the area. Our coaches and skill trainers offer year-round basketball training that is second to none. We prepare our players using proper fundamentals as well as the latest offensive and defensive drilla and techniques. Our practice and in-game coaching are consistantly reinforced by solid instruction that will assist our players in the making the "next step" and playing at the collegiate level.

Schedule

The Cal Stars Nike Travel teams compete in elite national college viewing events. As a member of the EYBL our Cal Stars Nike Elite team competes in the "LEAGUE". However, our remaining Nike Travel Teams are always placed in the highest of brackets in terms of compeition and college exposure. Our remaining high school teams are also placed in competitive brackets at these events.

Our youth team compete in the AAU Pacific District Tournament Series tournaments, which are highly regarded in AAU circles as being the best tournaments in the region.

Our college viewing tournament includes the following tournaments:

* Nike Summer Showcase (Chicago, Ill)
* Nike Battle of the Boro (Nashville, TN)

* Nike Nationals (Augusta, SC)

College Recruiting

The Cal Stars coaching staff are extremely respected in the college coaching community. We have years of experience working with college coaches from nearly every major Division I, II, & III in the country. In addition, we also have an outstanding working relationship with NAIA and top Junior Colleges. We provide extensive recruiting assistance for all of our Cal Star players. We have a proven track record of placing our players into these schools.

The Cal Stars is pleased to present a full slate of girls basketball teams with grades ranging from 4th Grade through High School. Typically we have the following teams.

PRACTICES

Cal Stars practices are held throughout the Bay Area in various gyms, which include but are not limited to The Ultimate Fieldhouse, Nor Cal Courts, Jamtown, Happy Valley School, Bentley HS, Wagner Ranch, Miramonte HS, Seven Hills School, St. Mary's College.

Our teams practice 2-3 times weekly and focus on skill development and team development.

Cal Stars Basketball Club, a Nike Girls Elite Youth Basketball Organization, features teams from 3rd grade through 12th Grade. The Cal Stars program runs TEN months out of the year.  Seasons are broken up into two segments.

Spring/Summer Season - February through July
* Youth Tryouts - February.  Tournaments begin in March and end in June
* High School Tryouts - March.  Tournament play begins in April and ends in July.

Cost for tryouts/evaluations is $50.

Fall/Winter Season - September through December
* Youth Tryouts - September. Tournaments run October-December
* High School Evaluations - September - Play ONE NCAA Viewing Tournament

Off Season -  The months of August and January are "OFF"  for the Cal Stars. The bulk of both February and June are also slow times for the Cal Stars.

Cal Stars Elite / Cal Stars Ultimate
The Cal Stars youth program is broken to two sections, Cal Stars Elite and Cal Stars U. Both programs are fundamentally based with the key components being skill and game development. Cal Stars Elite is a travel/tournament team.  These teams will play in tournaments locally, regionally, and nationally. Cal Stars Elite is a great opportunity for players to compete against some of the best competition at their grade level. Practice days and times may vary.

Cal Stars U teams are local, league play teams with some tournament options. Cal Stars U teams will practice on Monday and Wednesdays at the Ultimate Field House.  League play is on Saturday and/or Sundays at local gyms through the MVP Flight League.Spring season begins March 1 and is complete at the end of May.  Summer session will begin in early June and run through August.

Our partnership with the Ultimate Fieldhouse has allowed us to serve a broader group of players and skills levels while offering them the best of both worlds. We will place players on teams appropriate to their skill and playing desire after the evaluations. Cost per program:

Cal Stars Elite:  6,7,8th Flight teams $1590 plus $95 uniform fee
Cal Stars Elite: 6th & 8th National teams $1990 plus $95 uniform fee

Cal Stars U - $595 for Spring season plus $60 uniform fee

CAL STARS NIKE ELITE TRAVEL PROGRAM

Our high school program is an elite-level, national traveling basketball program.  We are highly respected by college coaches, club coaches, recruiting services, and media outlets across the country. We play in high-caliber national tournaments all over the country, in events that very well attended by college coaches. All of these tournaments give our players maximum college exposure. Our NIKE affiliation also helps our players in the college recruiting process.
 
The Cal Stars also offers two "Signature" clubs in the Cal Stars. Our Cal Stars Nike Elite (16u) is our top club in the program. We recruit and solicit the best players in Northern California for this team. Our Cal Stars Nike Elite team plays in the top national tournaments and top national brackets. 
 
Our Cal Stars Nike Elite team competes in the Girls Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) sponsored by Nike. The EYBL features 32 nationally sponsored Nike teams in four divisions. These teams compete in two NATIONAL TOURNAMENTS, Boo Williams (Hampton, VA) and EYBL Indy. These tournaments are used for seeding and qualification purposes for Nike Nationals in Chicago Illinois.
 
Our Cal Stars Nike15u (Freshman/Sophmore) team  is also one of our signature teams. Our Cal Stars Nike15u also plays a national schedule and plays in the top brackets. Both of these teams are highly competitive. If you are interested, please contact our Club Director directly.
 
NIKE NATIONALS - The undisputed #1 NCAA College Viewing tournament is Nike Nationals. Nike Nationals is held annually and this year it will take place July 10-12 in Chicago. The Cal Stars are ONE of THIRTY TWO nationally sponsored teams to eligible for this tournament. 
 
Both the Cal Stars Nike Elite Team and the Cal Stars Nike 15U Team are eligible for this tournament annually. The 16u Division features only 24 teams while the 15u Division is limited to 16 teams.
